What web app development language should I learn?
Author: admin
Hi
I’m currently a PL/SQL developer making applications for the web. I’ve been offered some training, and am not sure what to ask for to learn next.
I know html and basic Javascript stuff.
I’m thinking that PHP or more advanced Javascript might be most useful.
What would you recommend? What’s hot? And what’s yesterdays news?
Cheers

PHP + Javascript + AJAX is really hot nowadays

Author: admin
Hey everyone! This is quite a strange question and something I was just wondering. I really enjoy spending time in Germany, especially the Köln region. I’m currently living in London, I’m 27 and I’ve graduated University with a Degree in Multimedia Computing. Earlier this year I left a position I had for 3 years as a Web Designer for a College in NW England. I’m actively trying to learn to speak German but I wondered what options I would have to find some work/study (or whatever) in Germany. I left my old job as I wanted to take a year out and do something completely different, i.e. not necessarily a Web Designer. I’ve extremely IT savvy so I guess that could open some doors for further training etc? I speak basic German but I’m worried that I need to speak fluent to get something out there. Summer would be a great time for me but to be fair I would be happy to go out there anytime.
Can anyone offer me any advice?
Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it
Regards
If you are EU citizen you will have not too much trouble allthough you need to be fluent in German to get a decent job you can live on here.
I would recomend a language course preferedly in Germany itself and look for the job afterwards.

Help! I think my puppy is beginning to dislike me…?
Author: admin
My puppy is a 8 week old Pug. She came home when she was 4 weeks (I know she was too young, and I could go into details, but it’d take too long). Since her arrival, I’ve being spending most of my time at home with her. I don’t work, cos I’m living abroad (India) with my husband. We don’t have children, so it’s just me and Chanel (the lovely puppy) at home all day. He leaves to work in the morning, sometimes he says hello and pet her a little before leaving, and when he comes home, he spends maybe 2 hours with her, in the Tv room. Ok, I was the one who wanted a dog, so I take care of her. By that, I also mean that I am the one, not only feedind, of course, but housebreaking and teaching basic stuff. She already replies to her name, knows "sit", "come", "eat"… I am having a lot of trouble with her, regarding the biting. Which I already posted some questions here asking for help (in addition to books and info on the web I’ve being reading). The thing is, she’s started to not reply to "come" anymore these last days; she used to run towards me before, now she doens’t move; if I give her a toy to play with, she takes it and goes far from where I am. Because the biting was getting too much, I began to use the technique of "ignoring" her alone for a while. But she does bite all the time, still, so the time she spends alone, became longer and longer (not in one single time, but all in all, during the day). I’m afraid I am being "punished" by her, for trying to teach her the commands (which I make a funny time, with treats and do keep them short). She was doing so well, and seemed so interested on me and in the "training sessions" before, but now she doesn’t like it anymore. My husband just follows what I tell him to do with her. He likes her, just isn’t a big dog person, but if she is around him, he also plays and pet her a lot. Maybe I feel that he is becoming the "good guy" and I, "the bad one". I know she is young, so I’m not teaching her "complicated or advanced stuff", just basics and, mainly now, trying to stop the biting. But how do I get her to still want to be around me, and at the same time, teach her that certain things are not allowed? She likes my presence, notice that, when I come and she starts play "biting" with me, which I then stop. Other than this kind of "game", she doesn’t want me so much… Everytime I put her on my lap, try to play with a toy or pet her on the sofa, seems boring for her, and the biting starts so the fun is over , so she gets far from me. I give her my best, in all senses. She doesn’t seem scared of me (no reason to be, I never hurt or hit her, anything like that), the feeling I have is that she finds me boring and too difficult to be around. Please, what should I do to get her trust and interest back? Stop the training? Let her try to grow out of the biting phase, by herself? Just play in wherever way she wants?
You know, I think you’ve started the training way too soon. Normally puppies are still with their mothers at 8 weeks and even when they go to their new owners they should be allowed to settle in and get their bearings and then just have natural play within the confines of your own garden.
All puppies go through this phase of not wanting to be fussed and cuddled all the time - there are much more exciting things to do once they find their feet. It’s their way of becoming independent as they start to explore and they all look for mischief at this age……..I know!
The first basic command a puppy should learn is ’sit’ when they have had time to settle in their new home. The rest of the training will follow.
At first your puppy probably thought you were just playing with her but now she is bored with all this training you are trying to hammer into her.
My advice would be to just let her play quietly with her toys. Get her a Kong and fill it with some of her daily ration of Kibble and let her amuse herself with that every now and then while you get on with something else. As I said before, you don’t want to saturate her brain with all this training. Wait until she is at least 3 months old - she will respond much quicker then.
Once she has had all her shots try and take her for little rides in the car to get her used to it and maybe just walk a little way around in your Supermarket car park with her to get her used to traffic and she will then learn to socialise with people because everyone wants to come over to see a new puppy and she will have plenty of admirers I’m sure.
Try not to get too obsessed over her. She needs to be allowed to develop slowly but surely. You will soon get her trust back again. Let her come to you when she wants to. In other words take a step back and leave off the training for the time being.

Alberta Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate?
Author: admin
Hello..
I have a training this week for the Alberta Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate. Any idea if there is any web site I can read for this training in advance. They said there will be a test at the end of the course note that this course is standard and the first aid training is the basic one.
Thanks for your help in advance
Who are you taking it from? I took first aid and CPR from St. John Ambulance (in Ontario), and I really didn’t need to know anything ahead of time. The test at the end was really straightforward too. I really don’t think you have anything to worry about.
Course for web developer to learn design?
Author: admin
My strength is in web development. I have a strong knowledge of HTML, Coldfusion, PHP, SQL and JavaScript. For design, I’m also very knowledgable in CSS and jQuery (including AJAX). I can put all of this together into a website or web application no problem. But, the end result is never something I’m very visually satisfied with. And I know if I’m not happy with it, others are going to feel the same way.
Can anyone recommend an outstanding course (up to 5 days) or online training that could help me out? I’m looking for something advanced enough to be able to teach me the principles, must-haves, must-avoids, tips, tricks, etc. to design a website that’s on par with popular websites of today (as opposed to basic, run-of-the-mill, brochure-like websites.) FYI: I have a budget through work, so I can pay for the training and for travel within the US if necessary.
Thanks!
Thank you for the answers thusfar. I appreciate it! I do need, however, some sort of knowledge of the techniques, which I think I can get from a class. "king," I think you’re right on… Looking at great site design is a good way to start. But, I need to know what I’m looking for. Ix, graphic design courses sound like they might work. Can you suggest any for professionals (as opposed to college courses)? Thanks again!
First, I’ll answer your question directly, but then I’d like to suggest some online resources and books that could help accomplish your goal. I’m a web developer, too, and I struggle with aesthetically-pleasing designs. My best solution: hire a designer.
Adaptive Path offers a great conference (Aug 24-27 in San Francisco) on User Experience:
http://www.uxweek.com/
Adaptive Path (http://www.adaptivepath.com) also offers training, though it would probably be expensive for just a single person.
You may want to look at some online sources of inspiration for good design examples, and just learn from the sites that are successful. I have a few RSS feeds that I read regularly for great design tips:
http://www.smashingmagazine.com
http://vandelaydesign.com/blog
http://www.webdesignerdepot.com
The best way to make a good design is to look for other good designs, and mix elements from several of them to build your own.
I would also highly recommend these books:

Good luck. Feel free to contact me through my website if I can be helpful.

A question about Dreamweaver?
Author: admin
I want to get training in Dreamweaver. Currently in my job I use Dreamweaver to simply edit pages now again so my knowledge of the software is very basic (and so is my boss’s). We have an external web guy who deals with most of the website stuff, but none the less I would still like to get more advanced training. Would it be better to go on one of those 1 or 2 day training courses, or would it better to do a training course with one of those Home Learning Colleges where the course is carried out over several months.
Just go to the support pages on adobe, they tell you how to do lots of stuff. I always go there when I’m stuck. They also have forums with lots of helpful people, I always get my questions answered (correctly too).
~ thumbs down me? booo. comment below is good, telling you to just learn the code and not worry about dreamweaver. I write my own code and don’t let dreamweaver generate it for me. I only really use it for the ftp. And you can get free ones of those anyway.
Questions for Web developers about getting a job ?
Author: admin
For web developers with experience in the field
I have two questions to ask.
I have recently graduated from college with a degree in web technologies and am wondering how can I get a job in the web development field? I would like to work with an actual company than freelance. I have applied for a few but no response which makes me think something is wrong with my website or resume.
So far I have one completed web site that I still try to update and redesign to look more professional. I have done everything on the site from scratch. Could I get a professional opinion of my site? Any honest feedback is good. Please be specific as possible. http://tristateplasticsonline.com
Thanks for your time in advance

Expertise:
HTML, web design
ASP.net, Microsoft Database
FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Flash
Java, Visual basic, C++
You are a web designer according to the sites you listed. If you work with asp.net then you are going to have to put a site in profile to show it in action (microsoft database won’t cut it because it isn’t an industry standard, you must know mysql or sql). If you are using your sites as a portfolio for thejob, then the employer is going to test your sites (I am sure you are aware of that) and the C’s mountain site has firefox bugs which would probably show itself in firefox, chrome (google browser), opera, and possibly safari fix this before you go for a job. I am just going to tell you its going to be tough, because you know the very basics html (looking at the sites), they may offer you a beginner job (learn on the job) to acquire the skill you need in today’s standards of design.
I am being completely honest.
What are the basic steps of joining the Army?
Author: admin
I am currently in a long-distance relationship, and my boyfriend wants to join the army. I have several questions about the steps to join the army. He has already taken the ASVAB test, and made a 47, which is says is pretty low. Here is my list of questions. You can answer them all, a few or just one. Any information you can provide me with is helpful.
1) Can he retake his ASVAB? With his score, do you suggest he does? And if so, are there any resources to help him study for it?
2) After he has taken his ASVAB again (if he can), what is the next step? And what are the steps after that?
3) What happens during basic training?
4) How soon does he find out where he is stationed?
5) If we get married, when is the best time to do it? Before basic, after basic, during or after job training?
6) How does the whole process of moving to his station work?
7) What can I do to prepare myself and my two boys (under the age of 4) for this whole process?
How often will I be able to speak with him during basic? And what means of communication will we have (phone, email, web cam, instant messangers, etc.)?
If you only answer one or certain questions, could you put the number of the question you answered so I won’t be confused?
I really do appreciate any information you have to offer me.
Thanks in Advance!
Also, what are good jobs for him if he is colorblind, with his current ASVAB score ( we aren’t sure if he is, but we need to know if the army is still a viable option if he is)?
!, Yes he can take the ASVAB again but there is a long waiting period to do that, I think it is 6 months. Even though his score is not that great he still may be high enough to qualify for the specialty that he hoped for. He can also go to the public library and they have several publications that can be checked out that will better prepare a person for the ASVAB.
2, After the ASVAB he will then be scheduled for a physical.
3, Basic is where he will learn his basic soldiering skills. Marksmanship, Drill & Ceremony, Physical Fitness, Hygiene, Organization, Inspections and the list goes on.
4, Depends on his career field as to when he will find out where he will be stationed. Most service members find out where they will be stationed after AIT. That is why they put together a wish list. Regardless of what a lot of people say the military do try to accommodate a new soldier’s wish as to where they are stationed. After that first assignment then the sky is the limit.
5, If you are married before he go to basic then he will get a little more money. A married soldier makes a few hundred dollars more than a single soldier. Make sure you talk to as many military wives as you can, being a military wife is a tuff job. The divorce rate in the military is high so proper preparedness is key.
6, He will have to check with his unit. Depending on where he will be stationed it may be an unaccompanied tour, if that is the case the the military will not pay for the family to relocate. If it is a place that allow family members then he will have to go thru his administration section and coordinate the details for moving the family to the new location.
7, If you are close to a military installation then you can find their family support office and they can give you tons of guidance to better prepare you. It will be better to be married in order to have access to the installation and benefits.
8.Depending on the drill sergeant he may or may not be permitted to have a cell phone. Generally the first couple of weeks he will not have much time to talk to family members. He may have a very short period on the first Sunday that he is there but I doubt it. He will be given the opportunity to go to church service but if he do not do a service then they will have him gamefully employed. After the 2nd week then he will have more time to contact you, via phone, email and maybe web cam depending on location.
I hope that this helps you out. Good luck.
In Army lingo what does wetbulb (sp)? mean?
Author: admin
I was at Ft Leonard Wood many yrs ago for basic and advanced training and a time or two, when it got really hot and humid, they made us stay indoors or perhaps limited our activities. I think they called it wetbulb? Can anyone shed light on this? I hope someone knows what I’m talking about.
Web Bulb, Wetbulb, Web Ball, Wet Ball ???
I’m thinking it is probably an Army term meaning it is so hot and humid that activities have been curtailed?
Thanks!
I think the point is to measure temperature using the wet bulb method to get an accurate sense of what sweating human skin would feel, to see if it’s safe to be active.
http://www.zunis.org/how_hot_is_hot_how_safe_is_safe.htm
Wet Bulb Globe Temperature. The original work which served as the basis of this standard has been lost. A prominent exercise physiologist of our acquaintance has been looking for the seminal "Technical Paper" by Yaglou for more than one year, but it has disappeared. Suffice it to say that in the early 1950’s the US Marine Corps suffered significant casualties due to heat stroke during training activities at Parris Island, South Carolina. Prompted by this experience, the Department of the Navy commissioned studies on the effects of heat on exercise performance. These studies resulted in a heat index called the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature. In 1989, WBGT was suggested as an international standard (ISO 7243).
The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature is measured using three different thermometers: (1) A standard dry bulb thermometer (Dry Bulb Temperature; DB); (2) a standard dry bulb thermometer whose bulb is wrapped in a cotton sleeve, the bottom of the sleeve lying in a pool of distilled water, so that the cotton sleeve will always be wet, allowing continuous evaporative cooling of the thermometer’s bulb, simulating the evaporation of sweat (Wet Bulb Temperature; WB); and (3) a standard dry bulb thermometer whose bulb is inserted into a large (6 inch) black ball, to allow measurement of the effects of sunshine and other radiant heat (Black Globe Temperature; GT). These three temperatures are integrated as follows:
WBGT = 0.7 WB + 0.2 GT + 0.1 DB
"The wet-bulb temperature is a type of temperature measurement that reflects the physical properties of a system with a mixture of a gas and a vapor, usually air and water vapor. Wet bulb temperature is the lowest temperature that can be reached by the evaporation of water only. It is the temperature you feel when your skin is wet and is exposed to moving air. Unlike dry bulb temperature, wet bulb temperature is an indication of the amount of moisture in the air. Wet-bulb temperature can have several technical meanings:"
For air that is less than saturated (100 percent relative humidity), the wet-bulb temperature is lower than the dry-bulb temperature; and the dew point temperature is less than the wet-bulb temperature.
Cooling of the human body through perspiration is inhibited as the wet-bulb temperature (and relative humidity) of the surrounding air increases in summer. Other mechanisms may be at work in winter if there is validity to the notion of a "humid cold."
