STS-123 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) which was flown by Space Shuttle Endeavour. STS-123 was the 1J/A ISS embly mission. The original launch target date was February 14, 2008 but after the delay of STS-122, the shuttle was launched on March 11, 2008. It was the twenty-fifth shuttle mission to visit the ISS, and delivered the first module of the Japanese laboratory, Japanese Experiment Module (Kibō), and the Canadian Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator, (SPDM) Dextre robotics system to the station. The mission duration was 15 days and 18 hours, and it was the first mission to fully utilize the Station-to-Shuttle Power Transfer System (SSPTS), allowing space station power to augment the shuttle power systems. The mission set a record for a shuttle’s longest stay at the ISS.[3] The completion of the mission left nine flights remaining in the Space Shuttle program until its end in 2010, excluding two as-yet-unconfirmed Contingency Logistic Flights.

Planetary Defense

“Without exaggeration, I can say this is one of the most important documentaries made. You may quote me on this.”

Sir Arthur C. Clarke, Author of many books, including “2001: A Space Odyssey”, Futurist, Colombo, Sri Lanka, May 23, 2007

Synopsis

Scientists and the military have only recently awakened to the notion that impacts with Earth do happen.

“Planetary Defense” meets with both the scientific and military communities to study our options to mitigate an impact.

“Civilization is ill prepared for the inevitable. It’s not if an impact will happen with the Earth, it’s when!”
-Planetary Defense

Who will save Earth?

A 48 minute documentary “Planetary Defense”, about efforts underway to detect and mitigate an impact with Earth from asteroids and comets, collectively known as NEO’s (Near Earth Objects).

“Planetary Defense, the film, is a documentary that explores how ill-prepared we are to prevent our own extinction from asteroid and comet impacts. Filmmaker Mark Moidel interviewed all the right people, asked them all the right questions, and leaves the viewer scared for our future, but empowered to do something about it.”

Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist and Frederick P. Rose Director, American Museum of Natural History, NYC, May 24, 2007

Having seen many programmes on the NEO theme, and having been in quite a few, yours is really one of the best - factually accurate (unusual) and with a definite theme (also unusual). You picked excellent people, and you have summarised the NEO situation extremely well!

I have been involved with a number of documentaries, ranging from the BBC to Indian and Estonian TV, your production wins hands-down! A good structure, good people saying good things, and a good message.

Jay Tate, Director of the Spaceguard Centre, UK, May 25, 2007

Planetary Defense. Space Viz Productions, http://www.SpaceViz.com 2007. DVD. Astronomy.

This fascinating program introduces the concept of NEO (Near Earth Objects). Various scientists, science fiction authors (including Arthur C. Clarke), and military spokesmen discuss the probability of asteroids and comets colliding with our planet as well as the potential devastation this would bring. Apparently, asteroids and comets possibly colliding with Earth is not such a far-fetched idea as NASA scientists track a high amount of asteroids to determine their composition and path of travel. Interviewed experts show how to chart and compare data, and specialists speculate on methods of heading off approaching NEOs. Inter-cutting the interviews are space footage and computer graphics worthy of Star Wars films. Although interview segments vary in technical quality, this compelling documentary is a reminder that our planet is a small component of a vast universe, and we are not always in control of our destiny.

Planetary Defense. Space Viz Productions, http://www.SpaceViz.com 2007. DVD. Astronomy.

If terrorism, the economy, and global warming weren’t enough to worry about, this documentary takes worry to a whole new level—planetary extinction! It brings together eminent scientists, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, and legendary sf writer Sir Arthur C. Clarke to focus serious attention on the possibility of a catastrophic collision between Earth and an asteroid or other astronomical object. It presents evidence of previous impacts, the possible effect of various collision scenarios, and what actions could be taken to avert such a calamity. The documentary is especially good at showing how scientists are researching the problem and what policy constraints need to be overcome to mount a realistic planetary defense. It presents animations of impacts and scenes of scientific work in a visually appealing, fast-paced manor reminiscent of the Discovery Channel. Clarke and numerous scientists appear on screen. The program is formatted for broadcast with commercial breaks. Recommended for astronomical and popular science collections in all libraries.

STS-116 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Discovery. Liftoff was originally scheduled for December 7, 2006, but that attempt was canceled due to a low cloud ceiling. Discovery successfully lifted off during the second launch attempt on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at 8:47:35 p.m. EST. It was the first night launch of a Space Shuttle orbiter since STS-113, which launched on November 23, 2002.[1]
The mission is also referred to as ISS-12A.1 by the ISS program. The main goals of the mission were delivery and attachment of the International Space Station’s third port truss segment (the P5 truss), major rewiring of the station’s power system, and exchange of ISS Expedition 14 personnel. The shuttle landed at 5:32 p.m. EST on Friday, December 22, 2006 at Kennedy Space Center, a delay of 98 minutes from schedule due to unfavorable weather conditions. This mission was particularly notable to Sweden since it’s the first time a Scandinavian astronaut (Christer Fuglesang) has visited space.
STS-116 was the final scheduled Space Shuttle flight planned for launch from Pad 39B as NASA reconfigures the pad for Ares I launches.[2] The only remaining use of Pad 39B by Shuttles is as a reserve for a potential STS-3xx rescue mission for STS-125, the final Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission.[3]
STS-116 was the last flight of Discovery before maintenance; the next Discovery mission was STS-120, which launched on October 23, 2007.

STS-122 was a NASA Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS), flown by the Space Shuttle Atlantis. STS-122 marked the 24th shuttle mission to the ISS, and the 121st space shuttle flight since STS-1.
The mission was also referred to as ISS-1E by the ISS program. The primary objective of STS-122 was to deliver the European Columbus science laboratory, built by the European Space Agency (ESA), to the station. It also returned Expedition 16 Flight Engineer Daniel M. Tani to Earth. Tani was replaced on Expedition 16 by Léopold Eyharts, a French Flight Engineer representing ESA. After Atlantis’ landing, the orbiter will be prepared for STS-125, the final servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope. The completion of STS-122 leaves ten flights remaining in the Space Shuttle program until its end in 2010, excluding two as-yet-unconfirmed Contingency Logistic Flights.
The original target launch date for STS-122 was December 6, 2007, but due to engine cutoff sensor (ECO) reading errors, the launch was postponed to December 9. During the second launch attempt, the sensors failed again, and the launch was halted. A tanking test on December 18 revealed the probable cause to lie with a connector between the external tank and the shuttle. The connector was replaced and the shuttle launched during the third attempt on February 7, 2008.

STS-118 was a space shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Endeavour. STS-118 successfully lifted off on August 8, 2007 from launch pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida and landed at the Shuttle Landing Facility at KSC on August 21, 2007.
It was the first flight of Endeavour since the STS-113 mission in November 2002, which was the last successful Space Shuttle flight before the loss of Space Shuttle Columbia on STS-107. STS-118 pilot Charles Hobaugh had been the entry team CAPCOM for STS-107. Had the Columbia not disintegrated, it would have been chosen for this mission, which would have been its 29th mission, and probably its only mission to the ISS.
The mission is also referred to as ISS-13A.1 by the ISS program. The mission added two more components to the International Space Station as well as bringing supplies for its crew. The completion of the mission left twelve flights remaining in the Space Shuttle program until its end in 2010, excluding two as-yet-unconfirmed Contingency Logistic Flights.
During and after the mission, the media focused heavily on a small puncture in the heat shield, created by a piece of insulation foam that came off the external tank of Endeavour during liftoff. Foam impact was the cause of the destruction of Space Shuttle Columbia, but the extent of damage was very small in comparison and in a less critical area. KSC Launch Director Michael D. Leinbach mentioned in the post-flight press conference, that upon initial inspection on the ground “Endeavour appears to be the ‘cleanest’ post-flight orbiter since Return to Flight”. On August 31, 2007, NASA reported that the damaged tiles had been removed in the Orbiter Processing Facility, and engineers had found no evidence of heat-related damage to the orbiter structure beneath.
